The historic wall around the Washington Navy Yard, built after the 1812 British invasion of the city to protect Navy property from theft, was extended west in the early 1900’s to mark the new boundary at M and 4th Streets, SE. The stately sentry tower at that intersection remains today adding a distinctive marker to one of the entrances to The Yards.
